Not sure if it’s the sun, or the sudden desire to pack up anything that remotely reminds me of the recently terminated winter season, but I’m obsessed with the Spring/Summer season.

Naturally, I’ve checked out the fashion mags for the latest in “it” trends of the season: grid prints, sheer, all white (sidebar: is it really a trend if it, like never goes out of style - I mean is ‘all black’ or ‘all grey’ a trend - I could wear that no matter what year it is - just saying), and of course color.

Color will again make multiple appearances over the next few months and my Spring/Summer color obsession is Canary Yellow.

Behind the Brand: Meet Nasozi Kakembo

One of the best things about owning an online boutique and providing interior styling services through my company is discovering new product and connecting with the talented craftsman and designers who create them.

A few months ago, I was introduced to “origins style x Nasozi” a Brooklyn based line of distinctive pillows, benches and other home decor items. In keeping with the popular trend of globally influence product in home decor, the handmade line features, textiles in bold colors and glorious motifs.

I caught up with Nasozi Kakembo, designer of the internationally styled brand with local roots to find out what inspires her creations and what she loves about her home.

What was the motivated you to launch your own brand?

I started OSxN because I was neglecting my very creative and artistic spirit, which had always been central to who I was. I was always involved in the arts since I was a child, but I went to graduate school for social sciences, which despite being very gratifying does not involve artistic creation. I still maintained a very passive connection to the arts, but wanted to be a creator again.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by different things, but mostly from motifs and patterns I see in everyday things around me. Most recently I was super-inspired by a visit to the California Science Center in San Francisco with my son, sister-in-law, niece, and nephew. The colors and textures of the aquatic life were just out of this world. Nature is our biggest resource, for sustenance and so much more, artistic inspiration inclusive, so I was definitely inspired that day!

Where did you travel last?

I last traveled to San Francisco to visit family during the holidays. Before that I was in the Bahamas for a dear friend’s wedding during Superstorm Sandy!

What’s your favorite room in your home?

My bathroom. I updated it myself… over the course of the last 4 years or so.

When you’re in ‘grind mode” what music/song gets you going?

It can range from Sting to Billie Holiday. Dennis Brown, Fela Kuti, Little Dragon. I basically just play my itunes in order of songs most listened to! My favorite Pandora Radio station of late has been Kinobe, an amazing Ugandan musician.

I’m a die hard shoe lover, and I believe that you can tell about a girl and her mood by her shoes. What shoes are you wearing today?

"I Will Persist Until I Succeed" - Og Mandino:

It’s interesting how life works. We’re all in this rat race trying to find and give happiness and love. Things move so fast I find that I have to consciously take time out to reflect, show gratitude, and really look at the way things happen in my own life. I don’t believe in coincidence. I believe that things happen in everyone’s life for a reason even though we often can’t see it when we’re inside the rush. As Beyonce related in her recent Oprah interview, that it is only through reflection that we are able to connect the dots but the connection is always there.

I won first place, and a $1500 grant for One Third Tribal in the 2013 Plan & Pitch (that’s me on the left) competition hosted by Rising Tide Capital, which is exciting, humbling and so encouraging, but the truth is I almost didn’t even enter.

Up until the day of the competition I was so consumed with fear: fear of rejection, fear of public speaking, fear of overheating and passing out, etc., that I was ready to quit. I wasn’t even going to go to the event because I had convinced myself that not only could I not win, but I my pitch was probably not even good enough to be considered. Obviously, I did participate in the “Shark Tank-like” event, due in large part to the encouragement of my dear friends (Thank you) and I learned so much about myself and the way the universe works.

One of my favorite people, life coach and motivational speaker, Winston Trumpet, told me right before the competition that most of the worst fears are never confirmed. In essence, the fears that keep us from pursuing our dreams and passions are not real and in most cases - never happen, so we can never know what will be unless we Try (in the wise words of artist Pink).

I’m excited about the opportunities this grant money will afford my business, and honored that the voting panel thought enough of my pitch and presentation to award me the prize, but I’m so thankful that I continue to discover first hand the value of persistence.
